The Harlem Book Fair takes place in New York City on Saturday, July 21st, 2007. The largest book fair of its kind, the Harlem Book Fair is expected to draw more than 50,000 visitors to West 135th Street (between Fifth Avenue and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.)

BEACON, NY (July 11, 2007) - Another year of new faces and old friends marks the emergence of the 9th Annual Harlem Book Fair. Monica Madison, author of Girl from the Gutter will make her debut appearance at this nationally acclaimed festival of African American literature.
Girl from the Gutter is an intense and wildly addictive relationship story of Nikki Marks battle with life issues. This passage of awe-inspiring events goes deep under the surface of love relationships as it chronicles crucial moments in Madison’s life. This “realist fiction” novel is a stark portrayal of Madison’s real life role as the sole caregiver for her brother who suffered with the HIV/AIDS virus, trapped in a co-dependency relationship and finally blossoming into an independent woman, finding her own voice in this world.
“A good book does more than simply entertain you, it leaves you richer than when you first opened the book. It may take you to an unfamiliar place, or allow you to see inside the mind of someone just like yourself,” Madison said of her novel. “I hope my story has that effect on readers. If this book makes just one person think twice about having unprotected sex, then I truly believe I have done my job.”
More than 250 booths will be set up along West 135th Street, offering books, storytelling, readings and opportunities to meet and greet authors on four stages that will feature spoken word poets, celebrities and music throughout the day. Opening the book fair’s festivities will be the Wheatley Book Award ceremony on Friday, July 20, from 7pm to 10pm at the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture. This year’s award recipients include Eloise Greenfield, Walter Mosley, and Amiri Baraka for their accomplishments to the arts. The Harlem Book Fair is free and open to the public.
