FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT
OKLAHOMA CITY – An Oklahoma teacher, husband and father of two, has been selected as one of six finalists to compete for a $1 million grand prize on the reality TV series “American Inventor.”
Ricky DeRennaux, 45, a resident of Moore, Oklahoma, won his spot in the semi-finals with his invention, “HT Racers,” a model toy kit, which allows a person to design and build remote control cars, trucks, boats and airplanes out of paper. The kit includes patented folding tools and DVD software.
Finalists competed for the opportunity through a series of national casting calls held in major U.S. cities. DeRennaux defeated thousands at the Los Angeles casting call in June.
DeRennaux was inspired to invent an early rendition of his design about 12 years ago, while teaching high school and middle school students. He has spent considerable time improving the design over the years, and has spent approximately $20,000 of his own money to develop it.
Finalists were each awarded $50,000 to further develop and refine their inventions.
DeRennaux is currently the director of Tech-Now Inc. and oversees technology programs in 34 middle and high schools in Oklahoma.
The six finalists will meet for the first time on July 25. Only three will advance to the final round, where viewers will have their chance to vote for the person they think should become the next “American Inventor.”
“American Inventor” airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. (CST) on ABC.
