The project:
Message from the Soul is a prose poem written in 1968 by Professor Sadegh Angha. In 2004, composer Amy A. Wurtz set this literary masterpiece to music for an ensemble of five vocal soloists, choir, chamber orchestra, and speaker. In 2005, upon invitation from Nader Angha, son of the author, Ms. Wurtz traveled to Germany to organize, rehearse, and conduct the world premiere of Message from the Soul, which took place on the 9th of February, 2007, in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Following the success of this work, the Message from the Soul group has subsequently been invited to reprise the concert in countries around the world, where for each performance local soloists and orchestra players are recruited to complement the group. This blend of new artists from diverse backgrounds together with a core group of standing players sets apart each performance as a unique visual and auditory delight.
The Music:
Message from the Soul is part opera, part concert music, part theatrical, part chamber music, and entirely original in form and concept. The form itself is based entirely on the sometimes lyrical, sometimes dramatic, sometimes instructive, and highly colorful text. The musical language is particular to composer Amy Wurtz. It is not entirely tonal, yet also not serial, minimalistic, nor alleatoric. The music stems from the Western concert music tradition, yet also incorporates chant forms from traditional Sufi music. Lyrical moments and extended melodies are juxtaposed with rhythmic chanting; loud and nearly chaotic percussion sections are balanced by harmonic writing for the strings. The result is a thrilling and highly engaging “listener-friendly” experience.
