FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT

County Clare, 7th December 2007 – Three community and voluntary groups in County Clare have been awarded funding by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, under the scheme of Community Supports for Older People.

Ballynacally Community Alert has been allocated EUR1,300, Kilmaley District Day Care Centre receives EUR7,600, while over EUR9,700 has been allocated to the West Clare-based Shannonside Carers Group.

According to Mr. Tony Killeen, Minister of State and Clare T.D., "The scheme of Community Supports for Older People provides funding for initiatives aimed at improving the security and social support of older individuals by means of a community-based grant scheme."

Welcoming the funding allocation, the Minister stated, "I am very aware of the hardships that older people can face on a day to day basis. Therefore, I welcome any initiatives that improve confidence, security and comfort levels among older people in our society allowing them to continue to live independently."

"The security devices that older people may now benefit from under this scheme include smoke alarms, the once off cost of installing socially monitored alarm systems, security lighting, and window locks, door locks and door chains designed to strengthen points of entry to dwellings", said Minister Killeen.

The scheme for Community Supports of Older People is administered by local community and voluntary groups and funded by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
