Significant increases in the levels of concern about Internet and Personal Security have pushed Singapore’s Unisys Security Index higher, according to the latest results The Unisys Security Index TM for December 2007 has increased 4 points and now stands at 176.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT

These results also means that Singapore now has the third highest level of security concern out of the 14 nations where the Unisys Security Index is conducted. The fourteen (14) nations that make up the Global Unisys Security Index are Australia, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, Italy, Malaysia, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The increase in the Unisys Security Index TM has been driven largely by a 9 point increase in both the Internet and Personal Security indices linked to increased concerns about the loss of personal information, personal safety over the next 6 months and computer security in relation to viruses and unsolicited emails.

The key Index results for November are:
 National Security – 185 down 2
 Financial Security – 186 up 3
 Internet Security – 138 up 9
 Personal security – 195 up 9

Identity Theft, financial fraud and fears of a health epidemic remain the Top 3 concerns held by Singaporeans.

The number one concern of Singaporeans centres on Identity Theft with 83% of residents extremely or very concerned about the loss of or misuse of personal information, up 3 points compared to the previous Index.

Financial Fraud is the second most concerning issue for Singaporeans with 81% extremely or very concerned about other people obtaining or using their credit and or debit card details, down 2 points.

The third highest scoring issue relates to the potential outbreak of a health epidemic with 72% of Singaporeans, down 3 points against the previous survey.

“The results of the third Unisys Security Index TM for Singapore show the already high levels of security concern are continuing to increase across the key areas of Identity Theft, Financial Fraud and Health,” said Scott Whyman, Vice President and General Manager of Unisys Asia South.

“This increase has moved Singapore ahead of Malaysia (171) and into the Top 3 nations in terms of the overall global ranking of the 14 nations where the Unisys Security Index is conducted,” he added.

The Unisys Security Index provides a unique insight into the attitudes of Singaporean residents on a wide range of security related issues.

Organisations and governments today confront potential security threats that didn’t exist a decade ago, or, if they did, were not seen as such a pressing concern. These security threats are global and their effects impact individuals on a daily basis. Unisys approach to security goes beyond ‘bits and bytes’ recognising that there are a broad set of political, economic and consumer forces that impact the security ‘ecosystem’. We believe that the most effective solutions are going to be those formed through collaboration across interests, sectors, borders and geographies.
