When Tahari embarked on the creation of his new East Hampton flagship store he enlisted the architectural and design help of Lissoni Associati (Milan) and Highland Associates (New York). The historic retail corner was transformed through team effort into an elegant, modern space with a beach-house aesthetic, inviting customers to shop, browse or simply enjoy the retro-cool, beach-chic ambiance. The centerpiece of the space is a glass stair enclosure that slides through two floors to culminate in a skylight. This “glass box” design acts as a museum to display accessories, while the skylight allows natural light to flood this double-height retail space.
The one great challenge to the luxury retailer’s desire for a state-of-the-art sound system powerful enough to deliver nightclub level acoustics was that it must not distract from the retailer’s products, interior design or store architecture. McCann Systems was brought on to deliver a seamless sound system – completely visually hidden– yet cutting edge technology. This was made even more difficult by the lack of places to hide audio in this double-height, column-free space with a glass enclosed floating staircase.
“When we were consulted on how we would design an unobtrusive system for an historic retail space, we created some choices to help him understand what the different technologies were that could be deployed that could produce the quality of cinema sound,” says Jonathan Shor, director of technology for McCann Systems. “They desired a state-of-the-art AV system for customers to enjoy which would not alter the architectural setting.”
Speakers were innovatively integrated into the architecture of the ceiling matrix by McCann Systems. By specifying Tannoy “step speakers”, the type traditionally installed within the steps of movie theaters, McCann was able to deliver unsurpassed sound fidelity, while meeting the mandate that the audio system remain invisible. “Tannoy speakers are at the cutting-edge of sound system technology,” reports Shor. Base speakers were cleverly camouflaged into the matte Venetian plastered walls. Audio was also seamlessly introduced into the elevator. All audio equipment racks are discreetly concealed in the basement of the building.
