A New Jersey resident lost over one hundred pounds with successful gastric bypass surgery. The obese patient elected gastric bypass surgery with family support.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT

When Dawn Rodriguez decided to have the gastric bypass surgery at the New Jersey Bariatric Center, it was a very personal decision. She had done every diet, taken every pill and tried almost everything to lose weight. So, when Dawn decided to have the surgery, she also made up her mind that it was going to be the last thing that she did to control her weight. Dawn was going to do whatever was necessary to make the surgery work and lose the weight. She was also going to go into it with her eyes open. “I did all the research and spoke in-depth to Dr. Ajay Goyal of the New Jerseys Beriatric Center in Union to make sure I understood what I was undertaking,” reports the successful bypass patient.

Dawn then spoke to her husband and daughter. Dawn was prepared with all the statistics, good and bad, and all the information that Dawn learned so she would be ready to answer any questions they had, because Dawn was determined to move forward with the gastric bypass surgery. Her daughter’s main concern was what if there was a complication during surgery she could die. Dawn told her that if she continued at this weight, Dawn would probably die early anyway. She understood, and told her mother that she loved her and whatever Dawn wanted to do would be fine. Dawn then spoke to her husband, never really giving him an opportunity to speak until Dawn got all the information out. He looked her straight in the eyes and said “If you want to do this, do it for yourself, not for me. I love you no matter what you look like.” Dawn knew he really meant it, so she moved forward with the surgery with her family’s blessing.

Although Dawn never regretted her decision, after the surgery it wasn’t always easy. The family had lots of issues come up, even just sitting down to eat as a family became an issue because of what and how Dawn had to eat compared to what and how they ate. Then as the weight really started to come off, her own personal issues, the issues that caused Dawn to put on some of the weight in the first place, started emerging. Dawn dealt with it by staying in therapy after her initial psychological consult because , again, it was important to me that gastric bypass surgery was the last thing she did to control her weight. And even with a wonderful therapist who helped her work through her issues, it was still very difficult on her family. Dawn had changed. Dawn became happy, out -going, and confident, all the characteristics that she was not when Dawn was heavy. This change took all of us some time to get use to.

Dawn proudly says that no matter what the issues were or how difficult it was at any given moment, her husband and daughter never failed to support and be happy for her. Dawn lost over a hundred pounds. And to be honest, even though Dawn says losing the weight is her accomplishment, if it wasn’t for them, she doesn’t think she would have gotten as far as she has or had the success that Dawn has achieved.

The New Jersey Bariatric Center, led by Dr. Ajay Goyal, has offices in Union and Hoboken, New Jersey. Dr. Goyal’s approach to patient care has resulted in zero mortality to date and a complication rate that is lower than the national average. These surgical results stand out as some of the best in New Jersey.
