 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT
May 2, 2008 -- Prince Frederick, Md. – A newly expanded collection of fine art prints captures the magic and moods of the “water’s edge.” Created by Stephen Harlan and available from Harlan Editions in a series of limited-edition giclée fine art prints, the Waters Edge collection is being showcased at select galleries throughout the United States.
Waters Edge is a collection of more than 50 art works that please, relax and inspire in a very personal way. Harlan has created his own unique style, employing bold, rich colors and textures that reach out and draw the viewer into the scene. Through his striking depiction of boats on the water, harbor scenes and marine interiors, the artist conjures up a special mood ... and a special world that is almost mesmerizing in its effect.
Inspiration for the Waters Edge series has come naturally to Harlan. Originally from Minnesota, his family moved to Florida when he a boy. Consequently, his love for the water began at an early age when Harlan spent many days (literally) sailing into the sunset on his catamaran. Investigating the many colors and moods of the sea, harbors and sunsets has become a passion and has informed much of Harlan’s art over many years, providing rich opportunities for exploring the effects of luminescence and light-play.
Waters Edge prints are produced using a giclée process that yields the finest-quality graphic reproductions. Giclée prints have a wider color gamut, deeper saturated colors and more “painter-like” qualities not found in more ordinary lithographic or seriographic printing processes. The giclée process also provides better color accuracy print-to-print. The works are printed onto canvas, Somerset Velvet or Arches Cold Press watercolor paper using museum-quality archival dyes. All works are printed in editions limited to around 100 for canvas and 500 for paper prints. Most canvas works range in size from 24”x32” to 36”x48”, while the paper prints are produced in 12”x16” size.
Commenting on his creative approach, Harlan said, “Over the past 30 years I have been perfecting a certain style and a technique, gradually getting to where I am able to capture the true ‘essence’ of the subject. Inspiration may come from something as seemingly insignificant as the reflection of light or color on a fence or the hull of a boat,” he observed. “Some pieces take many months to complete, while with others the time to create them is much shorter. Often, a piece takes on a life of its own as I work on it. The creative process is quite exciting – even if it takes time.”
The Waters Edge collection has proven popular with private art collectors and interior designers, as well as with buyers for corporate art collections. Works in the series are currently on display in galleries across the U.S.
