All of us want our kids to be clean and healthy. But for children with eczema or dermatitis being clean and healthy can be a problem – and it’s all because of the bubble bath !
Children shower or bathe almost every day, using millions of gallons of water and vast quantities of soaps, cleansers and bubble bath. The age of the once a week bath is long gone – thankfully. Experts believe that one major trigger factor for eczema may be the chemicals used in everyday personal care products. Even some well known brands labeled hypoallergenic or sensitive can be a cause for concern. In fact, amazingly there are no FDA regulations governing the use of the phrase hypoallergenic or sensitive, anyone can claim this on a label regardless of the product formulation.
Most of the ingredients used today are perfectly adequate for the average child and have been safely used in many well known brands for years. But children with eczema or dermatitis have sensitive skin and need to be especially careful.
Take parabens, it’s a widely used preservative considered cheap, safe and effective. Yet in a 2007 clinical study looking at the irritancy of preservatives in 6,000 patients across 10 different hospital dermatology centers Parabens was found to be the most irritant with 2.8% of patients suffering allergic reactions. 2.8% is regarded as acceptable – unless of course it’s your child that affected.
It hard to always be vigilant, but do try to check the label - Here’s a few ingredients that you should watch out for:
- Colors
- Fragrance or perfumes
- Parabens preservatives (eg: Methylparabens, Propylparabens etc)
- SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate)
- Lanolin Oil
Bath time can still be fun, bring out the rubber ducks but do be careful when choosing your bubble bath, body wash or cleanser.
