Bedford Heights, OH, June 23, 2008 - A field target course will be offered for the first time August 18-22, 2008.
Located near Cleveland, Ohio, the course teaches shooters how to start, run and maintain a field target club. It will be held under the auspices of Airgun Academy, a new Pyramyd Air division.
The course will be taught by internationally recognized airgun writer Tom Gaylord, with the assistance of Earl "Mac" McDonald. Students will spend daytime hours in the field conducting field target matches and evenings in the classroom for additional instruction.
Subjects and activities include:
1) How to recruit new members.
2) How to acquire equipment and supplies, including field targets, lumber, paint and materials for reset strings.
3) How to locate and set up a field target course venue (setting up lanes, rest areas, sight-in range, public areas, safety fans, etc.).
4) How to shoot field target using AAFTA rules.
5) How to set up a match.
6) Hunter class competition.
7) Duties of the match director.
8) Duties of the safety officer.
9) How to organize a match (squads, scoring, food, safety, restrooms, etc.).
10) How to identify and emplace various types of field targets (leveling, different target heights, lighting, terrain considerations, testing, maintenance during match, etc.).
11) Building permanent field target emplacements (concrete bases, tree platforms, etc.).
12) How to handle alibis.
13) Safety during the match.
14) How to set up and run a club website.
15) Club finances.
Lodging during the course will be at a local motel, but students will pay for their own lodging, transportation, meals and incidental expenses. Cost for the 5-day course is $100 per student. Students should arrive no later than Sunday, August 17. There will be no evening instruction on Friday, August 22, the last day of the course. Students must be current associate members of the American Airgun Field Target Association and must bring their AAFTA manuals with them. Pyramyd Air and various manufacturers and importers will provide airguns, scopes/mounts, pellets, targets and other equipment. Students may also bring their own air rifles and scopes/mounts.
