In her opinion, popularity of Pandit Ravi Shankar worldwide is no way less than that of Bollywood’s SRK King Shahrukh Khan and Shahenshah Amitabh Bachchan.

Saskia Rao-de Haas, a brilliant cellist from the Netherlands has truly introduced a new sound in the world of Indian classical music. She has modified the cello to perform north Indian classical music.

With a strong foundation in western classical and Indian classical music, she has ensured that critics and audiences worldwide have always received her music with great enthusiasm.

While completing her master's in ethnomusicology from the University of Amsterdam, Saskia's love for Indian classical music took her to the conservatory of Rotterdam to study under Koustav Ray and Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia. With no precedent to follow, Saskia worked with singular dedication to adapt the cello to Indian classical music.

The playing style perfected by Saskia brings out the subtleties and the embellishments characteristic of north Indian classical music. She has incorporated new techniques that allow her to nurture the inherent closeness of the cello to the human voice and to explore unrestrained, the brilliance of her instrument.

The Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY), Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani Rajasthan chapter organized a cello performance by Saskia Rao-de Haas on Monday 01 September 2008 evening in the auditorium of the Institute.

Saskia picked the popular Raga Jog and played with utmost sensitivity which brought out a deep spiritual feeling. On Cello the effect was so deep that the audience was instantly elevated to a sublime plane. Certain chords in the fast tempo were so effective that they kept echoing in the mind even after the concert was over. After an hour’s play, sensing the mood of the audience, Saskia went on to play the elegant Raga Bihag and the rendering was sheer beauty and joy to be expressed in words.

Saskia’s Cello performance undoubtedly deserved houseful attendance at the auditorium of BITS Pilani and a standing ovation.
