High-Performance Centrifugal Compressor for Pipeline Transmission Project at POWER-GEN International 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Multi-million dollar project to enable hydrogen economy will be explained in booth #5827

White River Junction, Vt. – December 2, 2008 – Concepts NREC, a world leader in turbomachinery systems design and development, CAD/CAM software and manufacturing services, will share details of its recently won U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) Hydrogen Program project to develop an advanced centrifugal hydrogen compressor for pipeline transmission. Concepts NREC was chosen to develop the high-performance centrifugal compressor because of its decades-long experience in engineering, design, analysis and manufacturing of turbomachinery based systems for all industries. Concepts NREC representatives will be available at booth 5827 during the 20th Annual POWER-GEN International show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., December 2-4.

The DoE’s Hydrogen Program seeks to promote hydrogen as a fuel source to provide the United States with a diverse, secure, and emissions-free energy for the future. However, making the hydrogen economy a reality requires new technology to allow the efficient and safe use of hydrogen. Included in the challenge of using hydrogen as a fuel, is efficiently producing hydrogen, compressing hydrogen to usable energy densities, economically storing hydrogen, and rapidly and safely distributing hydrogen for easy access to the public.

Concepts NREC’s technical approach is based on the utilization of state-of-the-art aerodynamic centrifugal compressor designs and materials to enable operation at high impeller tip speeds.

This minimizes the number of compressor stages while maintaining high efficiency.

“Operating at high tip speeds to compress and deliver hydrogen allows us to overcome the limitations of conventional multi-stage approaches by significantly reducing the parts count, allowing for lower manufacturing and maintenance costs,” said Fred Becker, director of engineering sales for Concepts NREC.

“We are doing what we always have done, developing compressors, but we are pushing the envelope of impeller tip speeds and efficiencies,” Becker added.
