With recent results showing a strong recovery in Singapore’s export driven economy, entrepreneurship in Singapore is showing a renaissance – perhaps even surpassing what it used to have, considering its history as being a very conservative country when it comes to start-up investments. There has been little press on markets that have gained ground in Asia other than the heavy hitters (China), but reports have stated that Singapore’s market has also grown during 2009.
Entrepreneurs from Singapore who in the past had migrated their ideas to Silicon Valley have decided to bring their learning back home. With many projects and ideas still in the stages of seed or early stage venture capital, many organisations in Singapore have started to cater to building this stage. Some of the more accessible ones include iJam incubators, which invest around 50k Singapore Dollars in exchange for a portion of the company, along with the recently launched Singapore branch of the Angel Investment Network.
The Singapore Investment Network has new users signing up daily to look for potential investors for their start-up or small business. The site connects entrepreneurs and investors based not only in Singapore, but globally, which gives Singapore entrepreneurs a new way to reach out further to potential investors.
Recent news in Singapore shows a push for the increase in women entrepreneurs. A recent article in The Business Times cited a number of CEOs and Directors’ opinions on what the benefits of having more women pursue entrepreneurship in the current economy there would be. Along with this, Singapore is starting to notice the benefits of entrepreneurial activity in Hong Kong and Taiwan, where what may have been high risk, is also showing high reward.
The government is also making more efforts to attract entrepreneurship to young people in Singapore. Programmes such as the FedEx/Junior Achievement International Trade Challenge in Singapore have aspired future entrepreneurs from the Asian/Pacific region.
