www.kent.co.uk, a social networking website aimed at Kent, has seen an increase in student users which has coincided with the start of the new academic year.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fresher students arriving at Kent universities and colleges for the new academic year have been signing up to Kent.co.uk in growing numbers.

After research carried out by the site’s owners, it appears that students have been signing up for a number of reasons.

For newcomers to Kent, the website is a useful source of ‘insider information’; about Kent, provided by people who live there. As well as using the site for social networking, users at Kent.co.uk can upload details of their favourite local events and destinations in the county and share with their friends and other users.

It appears that students have also been using the site to meet people at their own college or university; a testament to the power of virtual online social networking as a means of meeting others, compared to the traditional way of meeting people face to face.

A number of public and private networking groups for students and their colleges have also been created in the site, where users can create their own online groups for any interest or hobby.

Of course most young people are already well used to social networking, and so it is a natural move for many new Kent students to migrate from the larger national social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace which don’t often cater for user interests at a local level, to a more locally targeted networking site like Kent.co.uk.

The website has seen a recent increase in users of university age, and has also identified several clusters around the county’s key universities and colleges including University of Kent at Canterbury, Canterbury Christ Church University in Medway and Canterbury, and Hadlow College.

www.kent.co.uk launched earlier this year and has attracted users from across Kent and beyond. The site combines social networking with Google mapping technology to allow users to see their friends, and favourite places, events or groups.
