Minneapolis Invisalign Pro Tells Parents When to Start Kids on an Oral Hygiene Regimen

2011-12-19 Print

Oral hygiene plays a vital role in a child’s health, way before children get braces, according to Minneapolis, MN Invisalign expert Dr. Trudy Bonvino. However, some parents don't know that a good oral health routine should start at birth.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LAKEVILLE, SAVAGE AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - Lots of new parents wonder about the right age to get their kids practicing good oral hygiene.

The truth is, an oral care regimen must begin before a child is capable of doing it on her own. It should begin shortly after birth, said Dr. Trudy Bonvino, a Lakeville and Minneapolis Invisalign expert who specializes in adult and child orthodontics.

After all, getting off to a good start can lead to a lifetime of healthy teeth.

"Good oral care should begin before a baby's first teeth appear," Bonvino said.

She offered several tips for parents to assist in making sure that their children’s teeth are healthy when they begin to come in, and they continue to stay that way as their children grow.

• Following feedings, wipe the infant's gums with a soft washcloth.
• Use a soft-bristled toothbrush designed for infants with water only. It is important not to use toothpaste.
• Use a cleanser designed for cleaning an infant’s teeth and gums.

Beginning at age 1, parents should brush their child’s teeth that have erupted at least twice daily. Once a child’s teeth have erupted enough to touch each other, it's time to begin a flossing routine, Bonvino said. Flossing the teeth should be done at least twice each week, according to the Australian Dental Association (http://www.ada.org.au/babiesandinfants.aspx).

"This is an important step to remember, because when the teeth are at a point of touching each other, food particles can become lodged between them, which can lead to bacteria growth and plaque development," she said. "I recommend that parents contact their local pediatric dentist for more information about when to take their child to his first dental visit."
