Brexit Set to Hamper Construction Industry Despite Strong Performance

2017-01-04 Print

Brexit is set to cost the construction industry hundreds of thousands of jobs, despite a strong – if not surprising – performance in the aftermath of the vote on June 23rd.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Positive figures reported from the Markit/CIPS UK Construction Purchase Managers Index indicate that the construction industry has somewhat recovered from the shock of the ‘No’ vote that reverberated around the sector. Housebuilding is reported to be on the rise, while construction projects appear to be at their highest level this year since March.

However with 2017 on the horizon and with the noises from Theresa May and the EU pointing at a ‘Hard Brexit’, this is set to come at a cost to the construction industry, with an eye-watering 200,000 jobs expected to be lost.

Consultancy firm Arcadis, who were behind the Brexit report, went on to say that a ‘Soft Brexit’ could still lose the construction industry as much as 135,000 workers, deepening the UK construction worker deficit.

With the construction industry heavily on unskilled or semi-skilled labour force – unlike other industries – could mean that a damaging skills gulf appears, continued the report.

This is set to have serious repercussions for Britain, especially with a booming population and a dire need for houses across the country. Plus with transport upgrades urgently required, the loss of 200,000 or more workers could mean a sub-standard transport system for years to come.

At Bag a Builder we are champions of skilled, qualified tradesmen in the UK. With years of experience within the construction industry, we’ve come across thousands of highly skilled tradesmen over the years who are a credit to the UK.
