Community Supporting Adults with Developmental Disabilities Finds Home in South Carolina

A community supporting adults with developmental disabilities finds a home in Bluffton, South Carolina.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

After 8 years of research and intense work, Osprey Village will soon have a place to call home. A contract has been signed to purchase a 38 acre property for the planned “neighborhood with a purpose” development in an outstanding location in Bluffton, SC, immediately adjacent to Buckwalter Place by the Bluffton Parkway. Closing on the property purchase is planned to take place by early May of 2016.

The purchased parcel provides 12 acres of buildable uplands surrounded by upland buffers and wetlands. In the initial construction phase beginning in 2016, six homes and cottages specifically designed for adults with developmental disabilities are planned to be built. Full-time residential services for up to 20 individuals with developmental disabilities will begin during 2017.

In addition, some 30 - 40 homes and apartments for other families, couples and individuals who want to participate in the “intentional neighboring” community model will be interspersed across the neighborhood.

All residents will have a wide range of choices to engage in all aspects of daily community life. A community center and swimming pool, along with walking and biking trails and nature paths, will be available to all Osprey Village residents to provide training, recreation and socializing opportunities.

As Osprey Village Board President Bill Lincicome noted, "our dedicated team of board members, supporters and advisors have been working to develop the Osprey Village neighborhood model for eight years. Up until now, we have been a 'cartoon'; at last Osprey Village is becoming real."

The location of Osprey Village near the Buckwalter Place town center will offer convenient access to shopping, services and employment opportunities at businesses such as Ace Hardware, Publix, Station 300, eviCore healthcare (formerly CareCore National), St. Joseph's/Candler Immediate Care, McDonald's, and a planned Kroger Marketplace.

With shopping, recreation, entertainment, medical services, police station, transportation, schools and houses of worship just a short walk, bike ride or golf cart ride away, this location will be ideal for both individuals with disabilities as well as their families, retirees and others who wish to participate in the village lifestyle.

Osprey Village will provide information on the resident admissions process in the coming weeks. Information on homesite availability will be announced early in 2016. For more information, email residentsospreyvillage.org or visit our website at: www.ospreyvillage.org.
