Acura of Boston Makes 2016 Boston Marathon A Family Affair

2016 Boston Marathon, Acura of Boston provided invitational entries to two fellow automotive-industry colleagues who also happen to be brothers that share a running enthusiasm – Doug and Drew

Brighton, MA – On April 18, the 120th Boston Marathon will kick off with more than 30,000 participants running the 26.2-mile route through Hopkinton, Ashland, Framingham, Wellesley, Natick, Brookline, Newton, and Boston. On behalf of the New England Acura Dealers, the official automotive sponsor of the 2016 Boston Marathon, Acura of Boston provided invitational entries to two fellow automotive-industry colleagues who also happen to be brothers that share a running enthusiasm – Doug and Drew.

“The automotive industry is fast paced, you have to surround yourself with a lot of great people to live up to the prestige of the Acura brand,” said says Bob Grelotti, general manager of Acura of Boston. “[Drew Spring] has been helping Acura of Boston perform at the highest level since 2013 and it is a pleasure to help him check off this bucket-list item – the Boston Marathon.”

Marathon-rookie Drew Spring, 33, will be running his first Boston Marathon. Originally from Illinois, Spring moved to Boston 6 years ago and has attended every marathon since. “And, every year I think the same thought: next year I’m going to run this thing,” said Drew. “But life gets busy, excuses get in the way, and I find myself once again as a spectator and not a participant. This year, because of the New England Acura Dealers and the generosity of Acura of Boston, I get to make good on the promise that I made to myself on Monday, April 20, 2015 – and the five years prior.”

Recently on vacation, Drew found time to train in between safaris in Kruger National Park. “I had elephants, wart hogs, monkeys and baboons as spectators. It was the most interesting and scary run of my life,” he said. Drew’s training also included a 5-mile run during a layover at Dubai International Airport’s 24-hour gym. And make sure to look for him on Heartbreak Hill, he has included running stairs at Harvard University so he is ready.

Doug Owen, 46, was six weeks into training for a 50-mile ultramarathon in Kansas scheduled for April 2, when his brother called with an interesting proposition. Drew asked Doug about the possibility of completing an ultramarathon and marathon almost back to back. After Drew presented the opportunity from Acura of Boston, Doug dropped the ultramarathon and registered for the Boston Marathon within the hour.

“This will probably be the only chance I will ever get to do this,” said Doug, who has completed two marathons and a 33.4-mile ultramarathon in Michigan but will run his first Boston Marathon on April 18. “As with any run – whether it’s 2 miles or 26.2 miles – I want to be “thankful” in my heart that I can still run. Over the years, running has saved me in a lot of ways and I don't ever want to take that for granted or ANY run for granted.”

Both brothers are extremely excited about the opportunity to run together. “We have been following our training together online and I, as the much older (wiser) brother, swore to not give too much advice,” Doug said.

“This opportunity for the both of us to run with the New England Acura Dealers is truly unique,” Drew said. “Doug lives in Illinois – I am in Boston – so although we cannot physically train together, we speak [almost] daily about how our training is going. Doug is not only my oldest brother, but is a great mentor to me and it is with great excitement that I get to share this experience with him. It’s truly special.”

“We will start out together but will separate, as a marathon is really a personal journey. We will celebrate at the end of 26.2 miles together, regardless of who is waiting for whom at the finish line,” Doug said.

As part of the sponsorship, the NEADA will provide the official pace cars leading the race, as well as a 2016 NSX and other Acuras to showcase along the racecourse. The NEADA also hosted a Live Art Show with Rather Severe creating a unique mural on a brand-new 2016 MDX at the 2016 New England International Auto Show to announce the partnership.

Founded in 1897 and held on Patriot’s Day, this year will mark the Marathon’s 120th anniversary. The marathon attracts over 500,000 spectators, making it New England’s most widely viewed sporting event.
