Woodbury, NJ – April 10, 2017 – Basic qualities in contractors, like reliability, good communication, and great recommendations, can be found in any web search. But what do the experts, i.e. other contractors, look for when they call in specialized contractors for projects?
“Google that exact phrase, ‘Recommendations,’ and a million things pop up,” said Nick Nykorczuk, contractor and owner of Creative Pavers, Inc., in Gibbstown, NJ. Nick has installed major outdoor projects and is often invited to lecture on project design and installation. “It’s good to ask about ‘outside-the-box’ things,” he said. Janet Stan, Senior Project Consultant for Homeowners in the Project Services department for NJ-based paving stone manufacturer EP Henry, agrees. “I like to call it ‘Homeowner Homework,” Janet said. Here, these two experts offer homeowners an insider perspective on what to look for in hiring a contractor for your patio project.
1. Find rigorous rating systems. “EP HENRY has an ‘Authorized Contractor List,’” Janet added. “Contractors have to apply and have their work evaluated on a regular basis.” Ask suppliers if they have a vetting system for their recommended service providers. Nick suggests starting with reading customer reviews at all the big recommendation sites, e.g. Angie’s List, HomeAdvisor or the Better Business Bureau. “How do they stack up on those sites?” Nick asked. Filter out the contractors with too many poor reviews.
2. Look deeper into the contractor’s insurance. “Ask if they have workers’ compensation to cover their workers?” Nick suggested. “That insurance tends to be expensive, and not everyone has it.” Look for a contractor that provides that extra layer of protection.
3. Ask who and what will be at your home. “Does the company own their equipment? Do they send the same crews throughout the project?” Nick asked. “This is a significant investment. You’ll want the specialized crews.”
4. Ask about warranties. Offering warranties for their craftsmanship is a standard practice, but lengths of warranties vary. Ask for details on how long and exactly what type of problems the guarantee covers. An extra step is to ask what the warranty is on the materials they are using. Stone manufacturers may or may not guarantee their products. Janet offered the fact that EP Henry offers a Lifetime Warranty on the structural integrity of their paving stones and wall systems. Ask for warranties on the work and the materials.
A home-improvement project is a large investment. Asking non-typical, insightful questions before you hire will add to the project’s success.
