Celebrate Arbor Day, April 28, with an Eye on Environmentally Friendly Landscaping

Every conservation step counts, from household recycling to composting to environmentally friendly, rain-absorbing driveways and patios.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Woodbury, NJ – April 26, 2017 With Earth Day fresh in our minds, we welcome Arbor Day, the celebration of trees. Like Earth Day, Arbor Day is an occasion to extend gratitude for the world’s natural gifts. Every conservation step counts, from household recycling to composting to environmentally friendly, rain-absorbing driveways and patios.

We know trees provide shade and shelter, but there are other environmental and financial benefits to having trees as part of your landscaping. Trees increase a home’s value, provide air-conditioning savings over time, and process CO2 emissions. Trees are essential for all life here on Earth.

This year, plant your own tree. Make sure to plant at least 20 feet away from the house and any paver stone areas. The Arbor Day Foundation has instructions on how to plant bare root, container-based, or burlap-bagged trees. If space is scarce, look for tree variations whose roots grow downward instead of spreading horizontally. Always check temperate zones before purchasing and planting a tree. Local nurseries can guide you in which trees grow well in the area.

Another way to celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day is to assess the home’s rainwater management. Keeping stormwater runoff out of the public drainage system helps curb pollution and in turn, increases the quality of the drinking water supply. Trees absorb a lot of water. A rain barrel is a great addition to any gardener’s toolbox. Some municipalities have civic clubs that construct rain gardens on public and personal property.

Paved driveways and patios contribute to the runoff problem. Pavers installed on top of a rainwater drainage system, like EP Henry’s environmentally friendly pavers, also referred to as “permeable pavers,” can shunt thousands of gallons of rainwater down into the soil instead of letting it run off the property and into storm drains that flow into our waterways. Driveways, patios, and walkways can be converted to the more eco-friendly ECO™ Paver systems.

Pathways to a greener Earth open up when we respect the nature around us. Plant a tree, welcome the rain, and breathe easier knowing your efforts will provide benefits for years to come.
