King’s Highway Trust Foundation Hosts Northeast Philadelphia History and Heritage Celebration


The King’s Highway Trust Foundation, a Philadelphia nonprofit whose mission is to educate the public on the history of Northeast Philadelphia by engaging the community with special tours and themed events will be the host for the first annual Northeast Philadelphia History and Heritage Celebration.

On June 12th, 2018 the House of Representatives passed Resolution 974, submitted by State Representative Martina White and her fellow Representatives – designating August 20, 2018, as King’s Highway Day in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania government created this day for the oldest continuously road in the United States of America: The King’s Highway, as well as the award-winning documentary of the same name. To honor this special day the nonprofit has scheduled a weeklong celebration of events. Franklin level sponsor Manor College will host a history workshop called “Share your Story” led by professor Matthew Smalarz. A walking tour of historic Tacony is sponsored by the Historical Society of Tacony, a Historic Bus Tour, Movie screening of The King’s Highway Documentary & Festival is sponsored by the Mayfair Business Improvement District.

The Northeast Philadelphia History & Heritage Festival is hosted by The King’s Highway Trust Foundation and sponsored by Manor College and Visit Philly. It will be a fun filled outdoor colonial-era event full of reenactments, costumed actors, colonial food and music, children’s games, interesting artifacts, and special guests throughout American history will take place at the beautiful Pennypack on the Delaware. This event promises to be the largest of its’ kind in the area.

“Philadelphia is undoubtedly the most historic city in the country.” said Jason Sherman, President of The King’s Highway Trust Foundation. “For the past several years our nonprofit has raised awareness for Northeast Philadelphia in a monumental way. This is why we have decided to organize all the Philadelphia neighborhoods together in order to host this week long celebration of history events.”

There will also be a walking tour and artifact viewing at the Historical Society of Frankford, and a Screening of The King's Highway with Q&A including the director of the film hosted by KORHeritage, Venise Whitaker, and 1701 frankford. These events all lead up to a special ribbon cutting ceremony and dedication at the 1697 King’s Highway bridge with state representatives in honor of the legislative resolution that was passed to name August 20th “King’s Highway Day”!

The King’s Highway documentary has sparked a new wave of interest in the history of Philadelphia and America, and the nonprofit continues to keep the momentum moving along with other sponsors such as: The Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Holmesburg Community Development Corporation, The Northeast Times, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, Aztec Signs, Grey Lodge Pub, and many more.
