McCarthy to Build Southwest Airlines’ Hangar Facility at Houston’s Hobby Airport

Airport Two-bay hangar maintenance facility to house up to six Boeing 737 aircraft

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT

Dallas, TX -- McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., one of the top builders in Texas and nationally, was recently awarded the Southwest Airlines Tech Ops MX Hangar project at the William P. Hobby Airport in Houston. The construction plan involves several preconstruction projects including demolition and utility relocation in addition to the construction of the two-bay hangar maintenance facility. The new hanger will be able to house up to six 737 aircraft. The facility will also have paved aircraft parking areas, aircraft wash facilities, taxiway connections, parking and loading docks.

“We are fortunate that our outstanding work on Southwest Airlines’ new office building and Leadership Education and Aircrew Development center in Dallas has led Southwest Airlines to continue their partnership with McCarthy to build the new hangar facility in Houston,” said Jim Stevenson, McCarthy’s Houston Division President. “Our reputation of building cutting-edge facilities is evident and will continue to be recognized as we commit to delivering high-quality work for this project as well.”

The overall program consists of six projects including the construction of a new duct bank for the Houston Airport System and Federal Aviation Administration communications; site demolition of several existing structures; relocation of the airport’s Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS); relocation of two navigation aids; construction of a detention pond for flood control; and ultimately the construction of the hangar. Preconstruction began in October 2017 with plans to begin work on the hangar in Spring 2018.

The hangar will be a hybrid pre-engineered metal building totaling 240,000 square feet. Approximately 140,000 square feet of the hanger will have enough room for six Boeing 737 aircraft. The remaining 100,000 square feet of facility space is allocated for offices, parts storage and other support areas. Outside the hangar will be 450,000 square feet of apron paving, with plans for one wash rack for the apron as well as locations for two future wash racks. Additionally, a 630-foot taxiway will connect the apron paving to Taxiway K.

The Southwest Airlines Tech Ops MX Hangar is McCarthy’s third project with Southwest Airlines. McCarthy is the eight-largest airport contractor in the U.S. (2017 ENR ranking). McCarthy is undertaking a massive renovation project at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport and has completed several other aviation projects including Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport’s Terminal E Enhanced Parking Structure, Terminal D which involved an elevated roadway and Skylink Automated People Mover System and completed several projects at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
