Oldest Horse Show in the Nation Celebrates 165 Years

The Upperville Colt & Horse Show returns on June 4-10

OR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT

The Upperville Colt & Horse Show (also known as the Upperville Horse Show), celebrating 165 years, is the oldest horse show in the country. The show takes place this year on June 4 through June 10 in Upperville, Va. (8300 John Mosby Hwy., Upperville, 20184). Gates open daily at 8 a.m. and show grounds close at sundown. On Sunday, June 10 at 3 p.m., the show culminates with the excitement of the $216,000 Upperville Jumper Classic that draws top riders from around the globe.

UCHS was founded in 1853 to encourage better breeding of horses. Since that time, thousands of equestrians, horse breeders and spectators have gathered in Upperville each year to admire some of the nation’s most talented horses and riders. What began as a one-day show, with only a few breeding classes, has grown into a week-long tradition with classes for children, adults and families—amateurs as well as top professionals. Each year, beneath the oaks at Grafton Farm, more than 2,000 horse and rider combinations compete during the week.

Highlights include the Welcome Stakes on Friday night from 5 to 7 p.m.; Leadline divisions on Saturday morning, during which adorable young children ages one to six (mostly on adorable ponies) try to win the competitive class; and the $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. There are other exciting classes all week that include side-saddle demonstrations and jumping, family classes, conformation classes and more. Click here for a complete show schedule. In addition to the $216,000 Upperville Jumper Classic on Sunday, June 10, there is a petting zoo from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jack Russell Terrier races from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m., and the Horses & HorsePower Auto Show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

General admission is $10 per person (free admission on Monday, June 4). Children under 12 get in free all week when accompanied by an adult. Bring a picnic or purchase food on the grounds. A variety of food vendors and retailers will be on site. Bring the family for a day of great horse sport. Browse and shop the food and retail vendors and enjoy a day in some of Virginia’s most spectacular countryside.

The Upperville Colt and Horse Show is a 501(c)3 charitable organization that raises funds for The Churches of Upperville Outreach Program and other area charities. For complete schedules and up-to-the-minute results, visit the web site at www.upperville.com.
