As the conversation around workers’ rights and protections continues to gain attention, Rancho Cucamonga City Council District 2 candidate David VanGorden is offering a clear and balanced perspective on what local representation should look like.

The District 2 seat is currently held by the incumbent Kristine Scott.

VanGorden says residents may begin hearing more about protecting specific categories of workers as the election approaches, particularly from advocacy groups and labor-focused platforms.

“Between now and Election Day, you’re probably going to hear a lot about protecting certain groups of workers,” said VanGorden. “That’s completely understandable — that’s what unions and advocacy organizations are designed to do.”

However, VanGorden emphasized that the role of a City Councilmember is fundamentally different.

“I’m not running to represent a category or a segment. I’m running to represent everyone — all workers, all residents, and all small business owners here in Rancho Cucamonga.”

Balancing the Entire Community

VanGorden pointed out that decisions made at the city level affect a wide range of people — employees, employers, families, and retirees — all of whom are connected within the local economy.

“Every job depends on a business. Every business depends on a stable local economy. And every family depends on both. When you look at it that way, you can’t separate one group from another — they all matter.”

He cautioned that focusing too narrowly on one group, without considering broader impacts, can create unintended consequences.

“Good intentions don’t always lead to good outcomes if the full picture isn’t considered. That’s why City Council has to look at the entire community, not just one part of it.”

Listening Before Deciding

VanGorden says his campaign is grounded in listening, asking questions, and making informed decisions — not reacting to pressure or adopting one-size-fits-all approaches.

“Residents aren’t disengaged — they just feel unheard. My responsibility is to listen first, understand the issue from all sides, and then make decisions that reflect the needs of the entire city.”

Keeping Rancho Cucamonga’s Balance

VanGorden also emphasized the importance of maintaining balance as the city grows — supporting workers while also ensuring local businesses can continue to operate and provide opportunities.

“Rancho Cucamonga works because there’s a balance. We have strong neighborhoods, hardworking residents, and businesses that create opportunity. We need to protect that balance — not tilt it in a way that creates new problems.”
