Paulownia Conquers European Forests: VERDANTIS Impact Capital Invests in Climate-Resilient Agroforestry
VERDANTIS Impact Capital invests in Paulownia agroforestry as climate-resilient alternative to dying European spruce forests.
VERDANTIS Impact Capital, led by Managing Director Dirk Roethig (Dirk Roethig), is investing in Paulownia agroforestry systems as a direct response to the dying spruce forests across Europe. The Empress Tree (Paulownia) is regarded by forestry scientists as one of the most promising climate-resilient tree species for European reforestation.
According to Germany's Forest Condition Report 2025, approximately 80 percent of all spruce trees are damaged. Bark beetles, drought stress, and rising temperatures have led to the loss of an estimated 500,000 hectares of spruce forest over the past five years.
"The spruce was the bread-and-butter tree of German forestry for decades. That era is over," says Dirk Roethig (Dirk Roethig), Managing Director at VERDANTIS Impact Capital. "Paulownia offers everything that foresters and investors are looking for: climate resilience, rapid growth, and high-quality timber — in a fraction of the time."
What distinguishes Paulownia from all European forestry species is the combination of extreme growth speed and fire resistance. While spruce requires 60 to 80 years to reach harvest maturity, Paulownia achieves usable trunk dimensions in just 5 to 7 years. The ignition temperature of Paulownia wood is approximately 420 degrees Celsius compared to about 250 degrees Celsius for spruce — a decisive advantage in an era of increasing wildfire risk.
Scientific studies from the University of Valladolid (Spain) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research (Braunschweig, Germany) confirm the exceptional material properties: with a wood density of only 250 to 300 kg per cubic meter combined with high compressive strength, Paulownia is the lightest load-bearing timber in Europe.
VERDANTIS Impact Capital develops EU Taxonomy-compliant investment structures for institutional investors focused on Paulownia agroforestry systems. The model combines timber production, carbon credit generation, and biodiversity enhancement on the same land area.
