In a move that sets him apart from traditional political campaigns, Rancho Cucamonga City Council candidate David VanGorden has publicly taken an oath of service before Election Day, pledging accountability, transparency, and a resident-first approach to leadership.

While elected officials typically take their oath after winning office, VanGorden is making that commitment now — directly to the people he seeks to represent.

The oath, published on his campaign website, outlines a clear promise: to serve the residents of Rancho Cucamonga with integrity, independence, and common-sense decision-making from day one.

VanGorden, a 30+ year resident and former law enforcement officer, says the decision reflects what he has been hearing from the community.

“Residents want to be heard,” VanGorden said. “They attend meetings, ask questions, and follow major decisions — but too often they feel the outcome is already decided. This oath is my commitment that their voices will matter.”

According to his campaign materials, VanGorden’s oath emphasizes several key principles:

  • Putting the public interest above special interests
  • Asking questions before casting votes
  • Explaining decisions clearly and publicly
  • Remaining accessible to residents before and after the election
  • Supporting responsible growth that aligns with infrastructure

These principles align with VanGorden’s broader campaign message that “growth without infrastructure is not progress,” a theme he has consistently raised in discussions about development and long-term planning in Rancho Cucamonga.

VanGorden says the timing of the oath is intentional.

“In most cases, the oath comes after the election,” he said. “But residents shouldn’t have to wait until after Election Day to understand how someone intends to serve. This is about setting expectations upfront.”

The campaign notes that local decisions made today — particularly around development, infrastructure, public safety, and fiscal responsibility — will shape the city for decades to come.

By taking the oath early, VanGorden aims to establish a standard of accountability that voters can evaluate before casting their ballots.

“This isn’t about politics,” VanGorden added. “It’s about trust. If we want to restore confidence in local government, it starts with being clear, transparent, and accountable from the very beginning.”
