Lilongwe, Malawi
Malawi faces a major financial inclusion challenge: roughly 65% of the population lacks access to formal banking services, and only about 19% access bank payment services. Low penetration of payment equipment and limited bankable touchpoints leave large portions of the population excluded from digital payments and basic financial services. Closing this gap supports economic participation across utilities, education, commerce, and remittances.
What the Startup Delivers?
DimuPayPoint is deploying a distributed network of independent paying kiosks and agent-operated terminals that enable cash-to-digital transactions. The service accepts bill payments (electricity, water, phone, city rates), examination fees, insurance, transfers to mobile wallets and bank accounts, and purchases such as TV subscriptions, event tickets, and lottery/betting transactions. Forex, money transfer services etc. Devices will be placed in high-footfall locations — shops, petrol stations, market stalls, community centers to meet people where they transact.
Why Now?
Mobile money adoption in Malawi is growing, but limiting infrastructure and low bank-card use (11.17%) constrain broader digital migration. With 62% of payments already occurring digitally in some channels, strategically placed kiosks can accelerate formal financial access and enable more reliable bill collection and remittances. The timing aligns with increasing merchant acceptance and demand for convenient local conversion points between cash and digital payment rails.
Program Plan (first 30–60 days)
Through EquityPilot, DimuPayPoint will: - Finalize device specifications and partner procurement channels - Pilot 50 kiosks in Blantyre and one secondary market, prioritizing utility bill payment and mobile wallet top-ups - Implement onboarding and agent training, agent commission structures, and compliance workflows - Build integration connectors for major local mobile money providers and two commercial banks This focused plan emphasizes execution milestones and operational readiness rather than fundraising commitments.
