Sydney — A growing number of Australian teachers are better recognising and supporting students with ADHD—thanks to a new training initiative that is changing not just classrooms, but outcomes for children who might otherwise slip through the cracks.

At this year’s AADPA Conference, Amy Cheung and Professor Jeff Fletcher will present how the ADHD Training for Teachers course is equipping educators with the skills to identify less visible and masked ADHD presentations, with more than 90% reporting confidence in using practical strategies immediately in class.

For many students, especially those who are academically capable or less disruptive, ADHD often goes unnoticed.

“These are the students who are ‘coping’—until they’re not,” said Amy Cheung. “When teachers understand what ADHD really looks like, everything changes.”

Teachers in the program report:

  • Improved ability to recognise diverse presentations of ADHD
  • Greater confidence in responding proactively rather than reactively
  • Reduced classroom disruption and improved student engagement

But the impact doesn’t stop there.

The initiative extends into a broader support ecosystem, including coaching, digital tools, and emerging virtual reality applications, helping teachers sustain strategies and connect students to appropriate pathways of care.

This model is helping to bridge the gap between education and clinical support, where delays often mean missed opportunities for early intervention.

“We’re not just improving knowledge—we’re changing systems,” said Professor Jeff Fletcher.

A Model for the Future

The approach delivers: Training → mindset shift → classroom practice → system-level impact
