HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — At 90, mystery author and interactive theater producer Barbara Fox is continuing a career devoted to murder, clues, and audience participation with the release of her newest book, Before You Turn the Page.
The collection combines four short mystery stories with more than twenty interactive solve-it-yourself mysteries. Each case challenges readers to study the evidence, identify hidden clues, and name the culprit before turning the page to discover the solution.
The book includes stories and mysteries such as “The Twenties Were Murder,” “Pickleball and Poison,” and “Murder They Wrote.” Some are traditional short stories, while others place the reader directly in the role of detective.
“I wanted to create a book that brings readers into the investigation,” Fox said. “Instead of simply following the story, they can examine the clues, make their own deductions, and try to solve the crime before reading the answer.”
The short format makes the mysteries suitable for individual reading, book clubs, classrooms, family gatherings, and mystery fans looking for a quick mental challenge.
Fox has spent decades creating interactive mysteries. In 1986, she founded Mystery on the Menu, an interactive theater company for which she serves as producer and director. Her audiences do not simply watch a mystery unfold; they participate in the investigation and attempt to identify the killer.
