New Delhi, India – 3rd January 2026

The Government of India has made BIS Certification compulsory for furniture goods under IS 17632:2022, as a consequence of the enforcement of Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025. As per the notification, only furniture goods labelled with ISI, which have been certified from BIS, shall be allowed to be sold in India from February 13, 2026.

Furniture is used extensively in different areas like homes, workplaces, cafes, and other institutions. Badly designed furniture may create safety risks due to its instability, potential for falling, or even premature wear.. In order to provide a remedy to the above-mentioned issues, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has come up with IS 17632:2022 ‘Furniture for Common Use-Chairs and Stools.’

The standard applies to:

  • Chairs for residential and office use
  • General-purpose stools
  • Furniture designed for general home and commercial use

Based on IS 17632:2022, the strength and load-carrying capacity, stability, surface security, material properties, and ergonomic comfort of furniture articles are determined through testing performed at BIS-recognized laboratories.

Who Must Obtain BIS Certification

Mandatory BIS certification applies to:

  • Indian furniture makers
  • Foreign productions that are exported to India
  • Importers and Furniture Brand Owners
  • OEMs & private label furniture suppliers

BIS Certification Process

The BIS certification procedure comprises: Submission of an application, Product testing by BIS-approved laboratories, Factory inspection, and The award of BIS license approving the use of the ISI Mark on products.

The use of the IS 17632:2022 standard and Furniture QCO:2025 is likely to greatly enhance product quality, ensure consumer safety, and establish an equitable standard for companies that meet its requirements.

Furniture companies intending to enter the market in India are advised to begin the process of certification from BIS in advance in order to have continuous market access.
